TUKANG SENI / STORYTELLER
“KL is my kampung, and its energy, vibe and toxic fumes run deep in my veins. I am a tukang seni, or design craftsperson. Over the past 29 years, I have had the immense good fortune to practice my craft in four beautiful cities: Kuala Lumpur, London, Bangkok and Singapore. In 2016, my work experience came full circle when my family moved back to Kuala Lumpur. They haven’t been able to get rid of me since.”
“My experience includes the usual scope of graphic design work, but what I love the most, is working where my skills intersect with the things I care deeply about, such as art, culture and community. I am a big believer in the blessings and benefits that can be found in creative collaboration. I live for a future in which we can all share knowledge and resources without political or economic hindrance.”
Allie Hill is a writer, photographer and design craftsperson that is deeply passionate about art, culture and community. A third-generation Malaysian born from ancestors who were migrant workers to Kuala Lumpur, Allie has also made her mark in London, Bangkok and Singapore.
For KLAF, Allie Hill is collaborating with Amin Kamrani to produce a photo zine project called ‘Stories of Migration in Kuala Lumpur’. The project aims to bring together their experiences and stories from both sides of the divide, documenting a small slice of KL’s beautiful diversity with a series of photos featuring inspiring people the artists have met here.
