DATUM:KL is a major event of the Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival (KLAF) and is PAM’s annual international architectural design conference that is both a platform of quality discourse and to showcase exemplary architectural projects all over the world. International and regional speakers are selected to share their philosophies and ideas. Since its inception in 2003, the conference attracts up to 2,000 participants each year that includes not just architects but industry partners, academicians, students and designers in other fields of built environment.
1. KongJian Yu (China) Kongjian Yu was a global innovator with his research on “ecological design patterns” and “sponge city”models. His projects had influenced ecological civilization policies in China and garnered international attention. His design philosophy advocated engagement with the natural environment, emphasizing solutions to environmental challenges such as flood management. He was a recipient of numerous international awards. Under Yu’s leadership, Turenscape had redefined the fields of landscape architecture and urbanism, emphasizing on the “art of survival”.
2. John K.S. Lau (Malaysia) Founder of Arkitek KDI, a highly regarded architectural practice originated from Sarawak with diverse variety of projects throughout the country. AKDI was listed by BCI Asia as among the top 10 architects in Malaysia for six years between 2014 and 2020. In 1991 the firm won the PAM Gold Medal for the Bau Civic Centre Building. John Lau was active in the building industry and was moving beyond studio work into the field of construction, which he considered as part of the range of the architect’s work.
3. Prasanna Morey (India) Prasanna Morey approached architecture fearlessly, working and taking risks with structure and materials for the sake of beauty. Architecture was the vehicle through which he dug deeply into “self” where the source of originality and imagination dwelled. His practice, “madhushala” implied the opportunity to dream and play, to discover and explore, to build and break. He also paid homage to history and culture in his work.
4. Praveen Bavadekar (India) Praveen Bavadekar was the founder and principal of Thirdspace Architecture Studio. The practice was notable for providing intelligent strategies to architecture and urban design through innovative ways. To Thirdspace, process was important in the way the architecture was deployed which normally had a strong relationship to context. Climate was also used as a strategic device in the works. The works of the practice consistently demonstrated rigour and creativity without succumbing to style.
5. Bayejid M. Khondoker (Bangladesh) A renowned architect from Bangladesh, Bayejid M. Khondoker worked with a team of innovative architects at Nakshabid Architects to create unique contextual architecture, which had a “dialogue” with history. The team believed in the relevance of architecture in particular time and place. Their works were highly experiential and immersive to the users. He was conferred two Gold Awards by Arcasia in 2023.
